One of my students is a senior in middle school. She is an overachiever. She gets straight A’s, is a cheerleader, in addition to is in numerous clubs. As a teacher I have learned that even the best behaved, most well rounded students often have moments where they rebel or provide into peer pressure, however i did an interest in class with my students where they needed to take out their cell phones to participate in an interactive quiz! The quiz was on the topic of drugs, including recreational marijuana. I observed my student did not take his phone out. I asked his about it in addition to he said his Mom took his phone away. I pulled his aside after class to check in with her. She admitted to me that he got caught using recreational marijuana in addition to his mother grounded her. His punishment for using recreational marijuana included losing phone privileges, having to take drug tests for recreational marijuana weekly before school, in addition to not being able to drive his car… My student told me that he had a lapse in judgment in addition to this was his first time trying recreational marijuana. His entire gymnastics team smoked recreational marijuana at a party over the weekend in addition to he was just trying to fit in with everyone else. She told me that he wasn’t thinking straight in addition to he now regrets his decision to smoke recreational marijuana at that party. I thanked his for being legitimate with me in addition to I told his that everyone makes mistakes in addition to it seems like he has already learned from his mistake of using recreational marijuana.
